Megan,
These rifles you so studiously mention were not invented nor were the cartriges they fired until much later. It is likely the Ephraim Hanks used a common muzzle loading rifle that fires a round lead ball. By that time, utizing a lock designed to fire a percussion cap or converted to do so from a flintlock. Probably in the 50 to 58 caliber range. These rifles were hand made by gunsmiths throughout the settlements, some were famous, some not so famous. There were many types more specialized for western travelers like the Haken or Plaines rifles , But those were very expensive. Coincidentally William Clayton, a contemporary of Banks owned one. This rifle now resides I. The LDS church museum but I digress. Likely the rifle was what we often use the generic term to describe as "Kentucky rifle". These were very common in anti bellum western frontier.

My comment is a little orthogonal to this article, but from the movie about Ephraim Hanks, Ephraim's Rescue. In the opening scenes of the movie, he healed a woman and spent two hours with a dead body before he brought her back to life. Does anyone know what he did during this time?

Harry,

What an interesting question! I took it to Google to grab me this bit of information from Wikipedia. Hopefully it helps you out!

"Three types of rifles in particular were used by professional buffalo hunters, namely the Springfield Rifle, Remington No. 1 otherwise known simply as the Rolling block, and Sharps rifles.[1] The Sharps was the favorite among hunters because of its accuracy at long range.[2]" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_rifle)

Hello, I just ran into this in my Hanks Place searches. Not much time to be writing, but my husband Gordon Andre Potter is related to Eph through his mother Mary Hanks. Gordon's facial bone structure looks so very much like Eph's…and Abraham Lincoln's. Also Gordon is a very strong built 6' 3 & 1/2" tall Special Forces Warrior who even has his statue standing to represent all Veterans at the Tonaquint Cemetery in St George Utahhttp://www.wchsutah.org/cemeteries/tonaquint-cemetery1.php
for a close up of Gordon's face see the artist's Article here:http://www.artinkayenta.org/artist-bio---ldeane-trueblood.html
If I had your e-mail I could send you many angles of Gordon's statues well as how he looks today, as the statue is when he was only 25 yrs old, and the guy modeling stooping down is of his brother Shawn Potter of St George, whom now is a Lawyer.
Please send me your e-mail and tell us IF you also are related. May god richly Bless you and yours.
